EC proposes to EU governments ban on Russian coal, jet fuel ... but not on gas and oil

Brussels, 05 April 2022, dtt-net.com – The European Commission (EC) today forwarded to 27 EU governments a proposal of fifth package of sanctions on Russia over aggression against Ukraine, which include bans on certain exports, but not on gas and oil which make EU's biggest imports from the country which continues brutal military assault against Ukraine and its civilians since February 24.

According to the President of the EC, Ursula von der Leyen, the proposal includes prohibiting import of some fuels, particularly coal, on top of a full transaction ban on four key Russian banks; a ban on Russian vessels and Russian-operated vessels from accessing EU ports (with certain exemptions), computers and advanced semiconductors, wood, cement, seafood, liquor; and more Russian individuals.

But the EC fell short of proposing ban on oil and gas which represent the biggest imports of the EU from Russia, however, as Germany and Italy are still resisting to the calls by some other member states, especially of Baltic states and Poland.
