Voting ends with high turnout at Montenegro referendum

(Podgorica, DTT-NET.COM)- A high number of Montenegro citizens have participated at today’s vote for the crucial decision on whether to stay together with Serbia or split and become independent.

According to first estimates at 21:00 (CET) when the voting stations closed, 86.6 percent of eligible voters, or 419.000 voters out of 484.718 voters’ have voted, local NGO organisations monitoring the referendum said.

The referendum has met the EU set condition which has says that more than 50 percent of eligible voters must participate in order the referendum to be valid.

The first preliminary results by Center for Free Elections and Democracy (CeSID) and Center for Monitoring (CEMI) are expected after 22:00.

No serious incidents or irregularities are reported during the referendum at some 1100 polling stations.
